Saltash derives its name from a property similarly located along the nearby Eel River that belonged to Thomas Clarke, a 1623 Plymouth arrival. Once home to several grandiose estates constructed during the Gilded Age, including Eben Jordan Jr.’s (Jordan Marsh founding family) sprawling 2,300 acre Forges Estate, the area became a popular vacation retreat for beach-goers and nature lovers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While almost all of these impressive homes have been razed due to maintenance costs, the area remains known for its once captivating presence, and continues to draw beachgoers in the summer months and outdoor enthusiasts all year long. The stately manors are now replaced with rolling fields and an abundance of open space for all to enjoy
Stately and distinguished, Saltash captures these historic characteristics and stands as an acknowledgement to the area’s rich history and the traditional values of its past inhabitants and is now poised to enter a new era in the thriving community of Chiltonville.
